Relocating a family across the world is never a simple decision, and moving from Australia to New York City turned out to be one of the most expensive choices we have ever made. The costs piled up in ways we did not fully anticipate. Shipping furniture, paying deposits on an apartment, securing school placements, and covering the endless small fees that come with starting over in a new country added up fast. Looking back, there are things I would handle differently. We overspent on temporary housing because we rushed the search. We underestimated how much it would cost to replace everyday items we had sold or left behind. Those missteps still sting when I think about the money we burned through.
Even so, I do not regret the move itself. New York has given our family experiences and opportunities we could never have found at home. The city pushed us out of our comfort zone and taught us to adapt quickly. The financial pain was real, and some of it was avoidable, but the life we have built here feels worth every dollar and every difficult lesson.
