Ponzi-style real estate scheme sends Boca Raton couple to prison

A Florida couple is heading to prison after federal prosecutors proved they ran a real estate investment operation that functioned like a Ponzi scheme. Jean Joseph and Janalie Camille Bingham, both from Boca Raton, were sentenced this week for defrauding dozens of investors out of millions of dollars.

According to court documents, the pair collected roughly $28 million from victims who believed their money was going into safe, income-producing property deals. Instead, prosecutors said, the couple funneled a large portion of that cash into speculative stock trades, often losing money on high-risk bets. They also used about $2 million of the funds to pay for personal expenses, including luxury items, travel, and other lifestyle costs.

The scheme worked like a classic pyramid. Early investors were paid returns using money from newer investors, which created the illusion of a profitable business and kept the money flowing in. But the whole thing collapsed when the couple could no longer attract enough new funds to keep up with promised payouts.

Federal investigators said the couple misled investors with fake documents and false statements about where their money was going. Many victims were retirees or people saving for the future, and some lost their entire life savings.

The judge handed down prison terms for both, though the exact lengths were not immediately released. The couple was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims, but it is unclear how much of the lost money will ever be recovered.

The case serves as another warning about investment opportunities that promise steady, unusually high returns with little risk. Authorities encourage anyone considering such deals to verify the people behind them and check with state regulators before handing over money.
