A growing number of real estate professionals are taking on mentorship roles with college athletes as name, image, and likeness opportunities continue to reshape amateur sports. More than 1,400 student-athletes have signed up with NIL Real Estate, a network that now spans 325-plus universities across the United States.
The push comes as athletes look for guidance on building personal brands, managing sudden income, and navigating contracts that often arrive with little financial literacy training. Real estate agents, many of whom run their own small businesses, say they are uniquely positioned to help. They understand commission structures, negotiation, and the long game of asset building.
For the athletes, the appeal is practical. A football player signing a local car dealership deal may not know how to vet the terms. A gymnast with a modest social media following may not realize her value. Mentors in the program walk through those basics without acting as formal agents or taking a cut.
Critics warn that mixing mentorship with a sales pipeline can blur lines. Still, organizers say the focus stays on education, not recruitment. Sessions cover taxes, saving, and how to say no to bad deals. For many athletes, that alone is worth more than the contract itself.
