A prominent Santa Barbara real estate executive is funding a petition drive aimed at overturning the city's recently approved State Street Master Plan. The effort seeks to place a voter referendum on a future ballot, giving residents a direct say in the future of the downtown corridor.
The Sima Corp founder is putting money behind the campaign, which organizers say is intended to restore vehicle access to State Street. The street has operated as a pedestrian promenade since 2020, when the city closed several blocks to traffic during the pandemic. Officials later adopted the Master Plan to formalize a long-term design for the area, emphasizing pedestrian space, outdoor dining, and limited vehicle crossings.
Supporters of the referendum argue the current plan ignores the needs of drivers, businesses, and residents who rely on cars to reach downtown. They contend that reopening the street to vehicles would improve access and boost commerce.
Backers of the Master Plan say the pedestrian-focused design supports safety, foot traffic, and local businesses. They warn that reversing course could disrupt years of planning and public input.
The petition must gather enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. If successful, voters could decide the fate of State Street's redesign in an upcoming election.
