California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a major settlement with Florida-based MV Realty and its CEO, resolving claims that the company trapped homeowners in unfair, long-term contracts. The deal was reached just before a scheduled trial in Oakland.
The lawsuit accused MV Realty of targeting vulnerable homeowners, including seniors and those facing financial hardship. The company allegedly offered small cash payments in exchange for exclusive listing rights that lasted up to 40 years. If homeowners tried to break the contract, they faced tens of thousands of dollars in penalties. Bonta said the scheme stripped homeowners of their property rights and equity.
Under the settlement, MV Realty must cancel all existing contracts in California and pay restitution to affected homeowners. The company is also banned from operating in the state for several years. The CEO personally agreed to pay a penalty and is barred from engaging in similar business practices.
Bonta called the outcome a clear message that predatory real estate tactics will not be tolerated. He urged homeowners to be wary of any deal that offers quick cash in exchange for long-term control over their property. The settlement provides relief for hundreds of California families who were caught in the company's contracts.
