A severely neglected Frank Lloyd Wright home on Chicago's West Side is getting a second chance. A community organization has purchased the property, known as the J.J. Walser House, and is planning a major renovation to save it from further decay. The single-family house, designed by the famed architect in 1903, has fallen into a state of serious disrepair over the years, with visible damage to its roof, windows, and interior.
The group behind the acquisition aims to restore the structure to its original condition and then repurpose it for community use. While specific plans are still being finalized, the goal is to turn the historic home into a space that serves the neighborhood, possibly as a cultural center or educational facility. This marks a shift from the building's original purpose as a private residence.
The Walser House is considered a notable example of Wright's early Prairie School style, featuring low, horizontal lines and a prominent central chimney. Its deterioration had become a concern for preservationists, who feared the home might be lost entirely. The sale and planned renovation offer a hopeful outcome for a piece of architectural history that had been at risk. The organization is now focused on fundraising and securing permits to begin the extensive work needed to bring the house back to life.
